The National Youth Theatre is New Zealand's largest and longest running theatre programme for young people. We change lives from the stage, providing a space where you are embraced for who you are and encouraged to share your unique voice. This is a fantastic opportunity for young performers to join us on the stage at the Due Drop Events Centre - BNZ Theatre, as we bring this crowd pleasing classic to life.

ABOUT THE SHOW:
Disney’s High School Musical - One Act Version  is a one act version of the hugely popular 2006 Disney Channel Original Movie High School Musical. The story centres on the blossoming relationship between Troy, a high school jock, and Gabriella, the new smart girl at school. They meet on a family vacation and become attracted to each other while singing in a karaoke competition. Rediscovering each other at school, their relationship and their surprise decision to audition together for the school show are thwarted by the school’s current leading lady, Sharpay, and Troy and Gabriella’s well-meaning friends. Finally, Gabriella and Troy find a way to be themselves and are rewarded with the lead roles in the school show.

Full of catchy songs and exciting dance routines, with classics such as Getcha Head in the Game, We're All In This Together and Breaking Free, Disney’s High School Musical explores contemporary issues of friendship, first love, and acceptance.

This is a three month training programme, culminating in three public performances (on Saturday 30th & Sunday 31st August) and four subsidised performances for schools, on Thursday 28th and Friday 29th August at 10:30am and 1:00pm.  If your school is interested in attending please get in touch.

Our cast will be broken up by age into groups, each group rehearsing separately for 90 minutes on Sunday afternoons. Thanks to our partners at Due Drop Events Centre, we will be performing in their amazing BNZ Theatre. Rehearsals take place at Weymouth School. The first rehearsal will be on Sunday 8th June, Weymouth Primary School.

National Youth Theatre is an all-access training programme for children and young adults aged between 7 - 18. You don't need to audition to be part of the ensemble, once you register, you are part of the programme and will perform on stage in all performances. Our lead roles are auditioned from within the cast. Our programmes are equally suitable for young people who have never been part of a performance to those who hope to make theatre their career. However, places are strictly limited, so make sure you sign up today to reserve your spot!

National Youth Theatre believes that diversity and inclusion are essential to creating a vibrant and authentic production. We aim to put together a diverse cast of young performers, and are working with a creative team that reflects the cultural and ethnic diversity of the Manukau community.
