Scholarships to National Youth Theatre

At National Youth Theatre, we try to remove all barriers that might stop people from joining. That’s why we offer scholarships to help families who need support with fees. These scholarships are at present just for our OnStage programmes, they are available in Auckland, Manukau, Hamilton and Christchurch. A scholarship covers all costs associated with the programme - your tuition fees, costumes, and even some tickets to the show for your family. If there is a camp, those costs will be covered also. You can see our policy document here if you're interested.

Here’s how it works:

How to Apply

  1. Ask a teacher (or another respected adult in your community who knows you well) to write a letter about you.

    • The letter should say why they think you would benefit from joining NYT.

    • They need to include their full name and contact details.

  2. Email the letter, along with your details, to: scholarships@nyt.nz

What Happens Next

  • We’ll read every application and try to find space for everyone.

  • If we have more applications than we can fund, we’ll look at things like:

    • How strong your teacher/adult’s endorsement is.

    • Whether you have financial or personal barriers to taking part.

    • Your commitment and enthusiasm.

    • Making sure we have a good balance across regions, schools, and communities.

    • Any special circumstances that mean you’d particularly benefit.

Final Notes

  • Our team will make the decisions, and we’ll let you know by email.

  • Decisions are final.

  • We review this process each year to make sure it’s fair.
